Couch to 5K program starts today

Big Island Running Co.’s free Couch to 5K training program for new runners begins today.

An informational meeting will be held at 5 p.m. today at Big Island Running Co.’s store at 75-5807 Alii Drive, followed by the first run on the schedule. The program will train beginners (or those who are coming back to running again after a break) to complete the Jingle Bell Run 5K on Dec. 23.

Konawaena winter sports parents’
meeting Nov. 7

Konawaena will hold a winter sports parents’ meeting at 6 p.m. Nov. 7 at the high school cafeteria.

All students interested in participating in one of the winter sports need to have a parent or guardian attend this meeting.

Winter sports at Konawaena are basketball, soccer, paddling, wrestling and swimming and diving.

hole-in-one

Bob Schwartz hit a hole-in-one on Oct. 15 at Big Island Country Club. He used a 6 iron on the 144-yard 17th hole.

Asia Pacific
Junior Cup Nov. 4

The Asia Pacific Junior Cup will be held Nov. 4 at Waikoloa Kings’ Course.

The event will pair two amateurs with two junior golfers, one from Hawaii and one from Japan.

The entry fee is $100 per amateur, of which $50 is tax deductible. The fee includes a post-play lunch.

Phenom basketball exposure camps at KS-Hawaii

Two Phenom Top 150 camps designed to give high school basketball players exposure to college programs will be held next month at Kamehameha-Hawaii.

The Phenom 150, for rising ninth- through 12th-graders, will be Nov. 3-4 at the Kamehameha-Hawaii gymnasium in Keaau. The camp for rising fifth- through eighth-graders will be Nov. 17-18 at the same place.

IKL karate championship Nov. 3

The Kona Branch of the International Karate League will host the IKL Karate Championship at 8:30 a.m. Nov. 3 at Kekuaokalani Gymnasium.

IKL Branches from Hilo, Paauilo, Honokaa, Waimea, North Kohala, Waikoloa, Captain Cook, Kailua-Kona, Kealakehe, Pahala, Keaau, Oahu and California will attend the event.

In addition, other traditional karate schools throughout Hawaii Island have been invited to participate in the tournament.

A special guest, the Founder and Chief Instructor of the IKL Shihan (Master) Walter K. Nishioka of Manoa Valley, Oahu, will be presiding over the event.

The tournament will feature competition in Kata (Forms), Kumite (Sparring), and Kobudo (Weaponry), for children, teenagers and adults.

Other martial art instructors from different styles will be in attendance and available to the public to answer any questions about their respective style of martial art.

The tournament is open to the public, and admission is free. The Hawaii Police Athletic Federation is a proud sponsor of this event that promotes sportsmanship, respect and good will among its competitors.

WDFI 2-person golf tournament Nov. 4; registration Friday

The Waikoloa Dry Forest Initiative two-person best ball golf tournament will be held Nov. 4 at the Waikoloa Village Golf Club. Check-in starts at 7 a.m., and the shotgun start is at 7:30 a.m. The registration fee is $80 per person, and the registration deadline is Friday.

The fee includes lunch, cart, green fee and tournament prizes, and an awards ceremony will be held at Kau Kau Depot following play.

Alumni Football USA games early next year

Alumni Football USA games return to the Big Island early January. These games are an opportunity for alumni of local high schools to play in a full contact football game while raising money for their old high schools.

The games are as follows:

c Kealakehe Alumni vs. Konawaena Alumni, 7 p.m. Jan. 5 at Kealakehe High School.

c Hilo Alumni vs. Waiakea Alumni, 7:30 p.m. Jan. 4 at Wong Stadium.

c Honokaa Alumni vs. Kohala Alumni, TBA.

c Keaau Alumni vs. Hawaii Prep, TBA.

Only the first 40 players to sign up for each team will get to play. There is no registration fee, but there is a $100 fee to play.

The fee includes everything for game day: Alumni Football USA organizes and coordinates the games, rental of professional helmet, pads and equipment, game day EMTs, officials, announcers, Field Liability insurance, DVD of your game and commemorative T-shirt. Maekawa a guest on the Emily T. Gail Show

Professional golfer Sean Maekawa is a guest on this week’s Emily T. Gail Show, which is available under “lineup” at espnhawaii.com and as an iTunes podcast.

Maekawa missed qualifying for the Canadian Tour by just two shots. He has joined the All American Tour in Arizona. He grew up playing golf with Hawaii State Junior Golf and the Waikoloa Beach Resort Junior Golf Program, and he was a BIIF golf champion who earned a scholarship to play for the University of Oregon.

Other guests include Timo Driedger, who is a recreational golfer, and Beverley Brand, Jen Lawson and Chris Kutler from the Waikoloa Dry Forest Initiative.

Driedger will discuss the Hawaii State Junior Golf Association fundraising efforts, about golf events and real estate activities along the Kohala Coast.
